Why You Should Hire A Coach
I had a conversation with someone this past week about hiring a coach for their first physique show.
This individual was sure that they didn't need a coach, they were going to do it themselves. After asking me a few times about nutrition and how I would program their macros, I finally said point blank "You need to find a coach especially for your first show because there is a real possibility that you screw up your hormones if you do it wrong."
It made me wonder how many other people are out there trying to prep for a show or get to a very low body fat and are doing it themselves because they just don't see the benefits in hiring a coach and a knowledgeable one at that.
There are so many reasons to hire one and I'm hoping that when people read this, they can see why I feel so passionately about this.
1) They can hold you accountable.
When body fat gets low and ghrelin & leptin get high, your will power can start to slip. If you have a coach in your corner, you are able to reach out and express yourself then they should bring you back to your goals. They will help you push.
2) They can be objective.
Almost all of us are very hard on ourselves, we continue to think we aren't in shape or slim/built enough so we cut calories or we do extra cardio. It is hard to see ourselves in the true light. Having a coach who you send pictures or measurements to, can help you see how you really look. They can also pull you back from pushing too far.
3) They have the knowledge of nutrition and macros/diets to be able to cut you down in a healthy way.
When people try to cut calories, a lot of the time they just stop eating. But to get your body in a shredded, stage-lean level, you have to get fairly scientific with it. It is a balance of fats, carbs and proteins, not to mention fiber, sodium, sugar and water consumption. To just stop eating, can cause your body to start eating at the muscle you've built. It can cause mind fog, issues sleeping, and so much more. That's just on the physical level, that doesn't include what happens to you on a mental aspect.
4) Prep is hard enough, don't add the mental stress onto your plate of programming and nutrition.
It is mentally and physically really tough to go through prep and competition. If you add on the part of taking charge of your own training, it just adds one more thing on you. It can cause you to either lighten up when you should be pushing harder, or it can cause you to go too hard when you need to take a break. It's just draining.
5) They should have your best interests at heart.
Anyone that is a physique coach wants to help you succeed. They want you to do well not only because you are their client, but also they want to show that they can successfully prep and reverse a client. And that client can do well at shows. As a coach, they want to keep you healthy, keep you happy and also have you do well.
6) They are a support system.
I've prepped for a show that I wasn't able to complete, I got about 2 months out when I quit for a few different reasons. But I was able to call my coach and break down to her even up to the day I quit. Your coach should help inspire you, motivate you, push you and be a shoulder for you to cry on when you need it.
7) They can help save (and build) your metabolism and hormones.
Getting stage-lean is extremely difficult. It takes a lot of time, a lot of pushing and a lot of sacrifice. If done the wrong way or too fast, can damage your metabolism and disrupt your hormones. By correctly dieting down, you are able to lose body fat and still eat more than the average person. Then the next time you diet down, it will be easier. If you diet incorrectly, it can take 2x longer to fix and build your metabolism than it took you to diet down.
8) Reverse dieting and support
The hardest thing after prepping is reverse dieting. Slowly increasing your calories until you get back to your maintenance calories. A lot of the competitors I've talked to always say that once the pressure of cutting is off, they tend to lose control. It can cause binge-eating disorder or restrictive eating disorders. Having a coach to help reverse diet, can be an extra step of health safety. A safety net. They won't make you do anything, but they can help steer you in the right direction.
My biggest piece of advice for people thinking about getting into bikini/ figure/ physique competing is do your research and hire a educated, knowledgeable coach to help you prep and reverse.
Is it expensive? YES. Is it worth it? YES.
